Bright Eyes Belly Dance at the Upstate Renaissance Faire: A Recap

Belly dancers

Fire dancers

Jesters

Knights

Unicorns

The Upstate Renaissance Faire had it all (and more) on two hot but glorious days in September 2024.

The Bright Eyes Belly Dancers danced the entire time--as tent entertainers, field performers, and stage performers!

This year, Bright Eyes Belly Dance hosted an entertainment tent decked in luxurious fabrics and sparkling with lights.

Friday evening, dancers and musicians performed as close to 5,000 faire goers wandered the Faire.

Wisteria Woods, a musical ensemble consisting of violin, guitar, and darbuka, also made its debut.

On both days, visitors from Morocco, Romania, and beyond stopped by to listen to music and to dance to music that reminded them of home.

Bright Eyes Belly Dance Field and Stage Performances at the Upstate Renaissance Faire 2024

On Saturday, the dancers took over the Field of Glory!

The belly dance flash mob opened a 20-minute set, with over 25 dancers performing a Very Short Drum Solo.

The Bright Eyes Belly Dancers continued the set with a nod to the Golden Era of belly dance, a dagger and sword dance, and ending with a mix of zills, tambourines, and cane.

After a bit of rest and rehydration (the day was HOT), nine dancers performed a Raqs Sharqi set on the Tudor Rose Stage.

The set featured three of our newest choreographies and two solos.

I can say with certainty that this was our best performance to date!

The Intermediate Group took a well-deserved rest, and the Beginning Belly Dancers joined me at the tent.

Nine of them performed for a fair-sized crowd twice in the full sun and heat of the day!

They incorporated what we had learned about improv in class and courageously engaged the audience as well.

The evening of the second day closed with more dancing, music, and drumming. At least 25,000 people passed through the Faire both days, and most of them saw a belly dancer!
