Explore Beowulf through theatre, metal work, art, and more during this five-day workshop of epic proportions!

Held May 15-19  at the Spinning Jenny in historic Greer Station, The Art and War of Beowulf will inspire a deeper love for courage, nobility, and bravery while encouraging creativity and comradeship in a beautiful space. By the end of the week, your teens will have learned the following:

  • How to make their own jumprings for chain mail
  • How to make their own chain mail pieces
  • How to use hammers, files, and other basic metal working tools
  • How to form metal to make their own Anglo-Saxon inspired pieces
  • How to use theatre to understand epic literature

This workshop is accepted as a semester’s worth of honor’s credit at Upstate Homeschool Co-op.

Where: The Spinning Jenny (107 Cannon St., Greer, SC)

When: Monday, May 15-Friday, May 19

Time: 10am-1pm (bring lunch!)

Cost: $150 ($120/student for 2 from the same family. $100/student for 3+ from the same family)

Day One:

Focus:  Beowulf vs. Grendel

Theatre: Tableaux

Art: Chainmaille

Creating chainmaille

 

Day Two:

Focus: Beowulf vs. Grendel’s mother

Theatre: Stage combat

Art: Copper cuffs, etching, and Anglo-Saxon art

Eden's cuff

Day Three:

Focus: The other stories- a look at the stories-within-the-story

Theatre: Scenes from the secondary stories

Art: Metal work

Metal work

 

Day Four:

Focus: Beowulf vs. the Dragon

Theatre: Scenes from the main story

Art: Create metal pendants

Pendants

 

Day Five:

Focus: Feasting

Theatre and writing: Practice and staging of the main scenes

Art: Copper pounding, doming, stamping, and patinas

Final feast (this may extend past 1): Parents are invited to attend
